According to the Assistive Technology Act of 1998 (as amended), assistive technology is defined as:
“Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.”
This definition includes a wide range of tools, devices, and software that can help individuals with disabilities to perform tasks, access information, communicate, and participate more fully in their daily lives.
